We started this to raise awareness for mental health in retrogaming community and the brilliant work of Safe In Our World.

The last chapter ran for many years and spanned Brexit, Covid and more which gave challenges to all of us. 

We have worked with industry greats, influencers and more to share our retrogaming journey and what those games, characters and more have meant to our combined mental health.

It has been amazing and we could not thank you enough for the support. 

However, as per our previous blog posts, the last chapter had its limitations. 

Not least, only being able to express small elements of the story and at the same time the control on the part of licensors. 

We completely agree with that but we felt we wanted the new chapter to feel a bit free, so here we go. We will be giving our take on so many elements of the journey, from sayings to quotes and so much more. You may find the odd bit of gamer parody as well. 

You will notice an updated site design and some new Tees and there will be many more to come. All connected with what fivephotonbiochemicals is all about, our love for the journey and ultimately #KeepingTheGameAlive.

Furthermore, not having to pay royalties also means we can lower our prices and keep supporting Safe In Our World. 

In fact we believe we can make more money for the work of the charity with your continued support. 

You will see all sorts of takes on the journey and what it has encompassed and we really do hope you enjoy it.

Well, it has been a hell of a journey over the last few years and a challenging one at times as well. Recently that has certainly been the case for all of us. 

But the time has come to make some changes for the next chapter of the story as we want to try something different.

We hope you will support us with that.

Anyway, here is the breakdown….

Firstly, we want to thank you all for being part of this. It has been a dream to fulfil it to date and share some of the best retrogaming journey memories and what that has meant to our and your mental health. Many special moments with some great industry greats, influencers and friends.

I mean who else brought you the Bitmap Brothers to Worms through to The Sims and Fighting Fantasy with exclusive officially licensed designs! And we did not fake any of it (unlike many others). 

We actually had hoped we would see even more sales than we got but that is another story.... Thank you to everyone who helped do this properly! 

We wanted to send you a note on where we are and what we intend to do next.

We are not giving up on everything and trying to support you and the amazing work of the Safe In Our World charity.

We have had to make changes as the time it takes to negotiate, get approvals and deliver royalty reports amongst other administrative requirements is so time intensive as a small team. 

Here is the plan:
- We have written to all licensors/partners to confirm that we will not be extending the existing license/approval that is in place beyond 30th June 2024.
- We will maintain an open dialogue with them should they want to undertake new initiatives with the fivephotonbiochemicals brand in association with Safe In Our World at any point in the future. We may bring some designs back if demand is there. You never know. Overall it has been a positive experience for us and the charity but the work needed to keep designing and obtaining requisite approvals is taking more time than ever which we do not have currently.
- What this means for now is that we will be removing from sale all of the licensed Tees by midnight on June 30th 2024. Unlicensed will remain as they form part of the next chapter.
- Even through very tough economic times for the apparel business, we are going to continue raising funds for the charity but by focussing on a period of time where we work on an “inspired by” range along with collaborators and influencers. That could be you! We would welcome anyone who wants to do one to support the charity. So spread the word.
- With the removal of many licensors who wanted paying as well, with the generic project, along with limited Safe in Our World merchandise like the well loved hoodies etc which we will keep up, we will be able to give more from every sale to the charity. The generic line of the story will enable us to tell more and have more bespoke fun and be able to give more of the revenue after costs on everything to support the charity's great work.
- We will not have a #SafeMentaliTEE event this summer but may do one later in the year when all these changes etc have come in to effect. If not, we will review in 2025.

In the early 1980s, a small but passionate team at MicroProse released a game that would become a cornerstone of football (or soccer, for our friends across the pond) video game history – MicroProse Soccer. In this blog post, we'll take a trip down memory lane and explore what made MicroProse Soccer an iconic game that still has a special place in the hearts of many gamers.

The Birth of MicroProse Soccer

MicroProse Soccer, developed by Sensible Software and published by MicroProse, made its debut in 1988. At a time when pixelated graphics and simple controls were the norm, it captured the essence of football in a way that was both charming and addictive. The game was released for various platforms, including the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amiga, and Atari ST, making it accessible to a wide audience.

This was an era when football games were everywhere and there were many to choose from. The design of the logo for Microprose Soccer very much reminded us of a badge for a kit, so that was the inspiration for this Tee design which is also available as a Hoodie.

One of the standout features of MicroProse Soccer was its easy-to-grasp gameplay. The game offered a top-down perspective, where you controlled a team of three players (goalkeeper and two outfield players) to take on an opposing team. The controls were straightforward, allowing you to move your players and perform actions like shooting, passing, and tackling with ease.

While the graphics were simple, they conveyed the action on the pitch effectively. The characters were represented by a collection of colorful blocks and pixels, but you could always tell which player was which. This simplicity in design made it easy to focus on the gameplay, and it didn't rely on flashy graphics to be engaging.

One of the most beloved aspects of the game was its realistic ball physics. The ball moved naturally across the field, responding to your actions as you dribbled, passed, or shot. Developed by Insomniac Games and first released for the Sony PlayStation in 1998, Spyro the Dragon took players on an epic adventure through beautifully crafted worlds, charming characters, and captivating gameplay. In this retro game blog post, we'll take a nostalgic trip down memory lane and explore what made Spyro the Dragon a timeless classic.

The system's first major success was the home conversion of Taito's arcade game Space Invaders. 

This console and period of history also lead to the founding of game development greats like Activision and Mattel who all wanted to get in on the action. 

By the end of its primary lifecycle in 1983–84, games for the 2600 were using more than four times the storage size of the launch games with significantly more advanced visuals and gameplay than the system was designed for, such as Activision's Pitfall. Perhaps we should design a Tee for that?

If you were, you're a legend of the Video Game industry itself. A pure veteran. 

If you were not around, that does not matter. You would have heard of Pong, it's influence on the video game industry and more. You must have played it! 

With this classic being 50 years old this year, we had to find a way to bring this Atari classic to the journey. 

Here it is!

Did you know that this table tennis style game was developed within a training exercise? Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell based the game's concept on an electronic ping-pong game included in the Magnavox! 

Magnavox later sued Atari for patent infringement! Yes it happened back then also. 

Pong was the first commercially successful video game, and it helped to establish the video game industry so it has to be here #KeepingTheGameAlive! 

Sometimes, we need to collaborate with others in the industry to enable great moments like this to be shared. 

In this instance we would like to thank the team at Difuzed for their support with bringing this part of the story to fivephotonbiochemicals.

We naturally took up this challenge and worked with some of the retrogaming community to bring you this design. 

Inspired by certain fashion trends and brands, we think it brings something different to the Cali Games part of the journey and notably during one of the hottest and driest UK summers ever witnessed.

Launched exclusively by streamers during SafeMentaliTEE 3 where we raised nearly €3,000 for Safe In Our World, it received a great reaction.

Perhaps it was endearing elements in his character that we loved. 

Really had some Taz / Tazmania animated character traits about him! Well, we thought so, even if you did not. 

Crash is an Eastern Barred Bandicoot and lives in N.Sanity Island and he was and is just super cool!

Crash was captured and evolved by Dr Neo Cortex in to what he became and throughout his adventures, Cortex is Crash's usual arch-enemy and is always defeated by Crash in order to keep peace on the island.

Originally designed by Charles Zembillas and Jason Rubin, his original name was Willy the Wombat (alternatively spelt Willie). Yeah, for real!

After rejected pushes from Universal Interactive (this was one of their better published games for sure) to name the character something more "family-friendly", like Wez or Wizzie, the amazing developers at Naughty Dog decided to call him Crash and the rest is history.

Crash as a name was coined due to his wonderful endearing tendency to smash crates along with shuffling the species of a few characters to accommodate for Crash's recently-decided name.

Anyway, traverse the Wumpa Islands however you like, but when you do, make sure you are wearing this Tee. An epic design that evokes many memories of early missions.

Yes, it was all dragons in 1998 and beyond. Spyro was special.

This game we so good and it got better. 

For us it was a period on the originally briefly in 1998 but loved it. 

Thanks to our latest collaboration, we are able to bring you this new chapter of the story to you. 

In the early days of Spyro, he was actually the mascot for Sony PlayStation, so he is that cool.

The original game was the best (we did not play them all), but we did enjoy when he turned up in a couple of Crash Bandicoot games. 

What we love about some chapters of the story are the way in which characters came to be and perhaps we have not covered that enough. 

So, here we will. 

Did you know that Spyro, as a concept, was originally brought up by Insomniac in-house artist Craig Stitt, who had an interest in dragons?.

In very early development, Spyro was depicted as green! Yes, green but fortuitously the developers noted that he would blend into the grass too much. Indeed so!

Green would not have worked well for other reasons, not least the other green reptile characters in the genre at the time such as Gex and Croc.

They were also on the same console at the time so another colour was certainly needed, to differentiate Spyro from these other legendary characters. They however are not quite as legendary as Spyro now are they? Not quite.

Anyway, in early 1997, Spyro's purple colour was chosen, due to it contrasting well with greens and other colours commonly found in various environments.

1991 the arcade was becoming something of a hobby (other distractions arriving also) on particular days and the desire to shoot things led to Sunset Riders.

A highly enjoyable side scroller gun shooter with a classic Western theme where you took control of a bounty hunter who is seeking the rewards offered for various criminals.

If you were lucky you’d find the 4 player version which was epic. The two player was ok. 

It was a little cheesy in places but on the whole an enjoyable side scrolling experience at a time when cowboys were perhaps not as popular as they once were in the younger years. 

You can tell by the manga-style character design that Sunset Riders is a Japanese game, but the game’s designers obviously love American Westerns (ie. old movies about cowboys) because the situations in this game pay tribute to them throughout.

One minute you’re jumping over cattle stampeding towards you; the next you’re galloping along on a horse trying to shoot chasing riders and jump over logs. Just like in the movies: when someone throws a stick of dynamite at you, you’ve got a short while to grab it and throw it back at them, before the fuse burns down and it explodes. There’s even a ‘shooting gallery’ style bonus stage, because it’s the law that all cowboy video games must have one…

Later ported successfully to the Megadrive, SNES, Playstartion and more it has been a game loved by many with multiple memories to share. 

This was a really cool cabinet design also, and as these are the inspiration behind the arcade range, we had to get the logo on the tee somewhere. 

Finally, we thought you’d enjoy a fill of gameplay to finish off the post.

This collaboration has been amazing but please note we are serious when we say these designs will not be around forever. 

Anyway, the witch was a real pain in the you know what in this game. The music however was a delight. 

From a game perspective, what was it all about? Well....

It was a maze game first off, which probably made it frustrating for an arcade game so the reward mechanic for an action game fan was a bit "off". But Bentley Bear was incredibly endearing and you just wanted to help the guy. 

Anyway, the game had nine levels with four castles in each, and a tenth level with a single castle.

If you ever got through all the castles by clearing all of the levels, the game is completed.

37 trimetric-projected castles consisted of a maze of hallways filled with gems and bonus objects and also included stairs, elevators and tunnels that the player can use as shortcuts. If you knew the way around them all, you had spent a fortune.

When all gems in a castle have been collected by Bentley, the classical music gem the Nutcracker Suite is played, and the player moves to the next castle.

Could have been a Sweet with all the colours in this game. 

We have kept this design, as we have with the other Atari Cabinet inspired Tees, very simple. 

It resonates with us and is on point. We look forward to you getting your hands on this one and sharing your stories on social media.  

Enjoy more from the game, which was incredibly complicated but rewarding. Put it this way, you needed a lot of change to get any level of medium term enjoyment out of this game.

Yes, that is true. 

Super Breakout is a legendary game, and you will have played not only this game but many copies over the years also. 

Super Breakout was the sequel to the 1976 video game Breakout released in arcades in September 1978.

The game uses the same mechanics as it's predecessor from a few years previous, Breakout, but allows the selection of three distinct game modes via a knob on the cabinet—two of which involve multiple, simultaneous balls in play.

Now, as with all the moments shared from the journey, here is a very cool video that shows the design of the cabinet plus all the history of the game itself.

No it would not.....

Asteroids is most definitely one of the original and most popular arcade games ever!

Released in November 1979 by Atari it was to become legendary in the story of the arcade.

By the way, the Atari VCS version sold over three million copies! Big numbers at the time. 

Gameplay wise, you must destroy all the asteroids and alien spacecrafts to complete each level. Each time you completed a level, the number of asteroids and alien attacks increased.

At all times you must avoid a collision with the asteroids or get hit by alien fire. If you did, you lost a life. An extra life is awarded every 10,000 points. Note that you can get close and it always seemed to get harder when a new life was on the horizon. Annoying when needed!

Be careful not to collide with the asteroids that are all around you, and avoid counter-fire from the saucers.

From the below video, it will not be hard to see where the inspiration for the design of this Tee from the journey came from. 

It is all pretty much self explanatory. A game that once you knew how to do it, you had a lot of fun and it was incredibly addictive. The original arcade version is still the best but we would say that wouldn't we.
